Cranial Sacral Therapy

Relax from the inside out as our Cranial Sacral Therapist uses gentle touch and movement to release accumulated stress and brings the body back into balance.
Cranial Sacral Therapists are trained to feel a very subtle rhythm that is present in the body's tissue, created by the circulation of the liquid that surrounds the brain and spinal column.  Tension anywhere in the body disrupts this cranial rhythm.  By working with the cranial sacral system, restrictions are released and the body is relaxed into a general state of well-being.

Cranial Sacral Therapy (CST) was developed in the early 1900's.
by an osteopathic physician named William Sutherland who discovered that the skull bones are designed for movement.  This therapy is continually being researched today by the Colorado Cranial Institute, the Upledger Institute, and the Society of Ortho-Bionomy just to name a few.

What is the Cranial Sacral system?
The cranial bones are connected to the sacrum by a continuous membrane system of connective tissue that houses the brain and spinal cord.  The spinal fluid is pumped through the membranes, creating a rythm, or cranial pulse, that is similar to the heartbeat and can thus be monitored and balanced.  The whole body expands and contracts with this rythm, but the cranial pulse can be most easily felt on the head.

What is a CST session like?
During a Cranial Sacral Therapy session, a light, gentle touch, about the weight of a nickel, is used to tune into the tissue of the body and feel for the subtle rythm of the cerebrospinal fluid.  The therapist may introduce small movements to assist the tissue to "unwind".  The whole body is addressed with a concentration placed on the cranial bones within the head and face and the sacrum at the base of the spine.  People's experiences during treatment may vary: some may notice and enjoy the fluidic sensations within the body, others may feel as if they've gone to sleep, and some may find the work uneventful until they get up off the massage table.  All leave the session feeling profoundly relaxed with an overall sense of well-being that may last for a number of days.

What can be achieved by bringing your Cranial Sacral system into balance?
Because Cranial Sacral Therapy is a non-invasive form of bodywork that works with the central nervous system to stimulate your body's own natural healing mechanisms, it is appropriate for anyone from babies to the elderly.  CST can be extremely effective in dealing with many conditions including the following:
  • Release of accumulated stress
  • Achieving a general state of well-being
  • Release of emotional holding patterns
  • Relief from headaches and other problems associated with the head, jaw, neck, pelvis and diaphragm
  • Conditions as diverse as learning disabilities, poor concentration, biochemical dysfunction, and palsy start to clear up with CST
